Ridgewood Board of Education Appoints Superintendent of Schools

Ridgewood, NJ – The Ridgewood Board of Education unanimously appointed Dr. Thomas A. Gorman as Superintendent of Schools at the March 8, 2021 regular public meeting. Dr. Gorman, principal of Ridgewood High School, has been serving as acting superintendent for the past three months while the Board conducted the search process with the assistance of R-PAT Solutions, LLC.

During his tenure at Ridgewood High School, Dr. Gorman was at the forefront of major initiatives and accomplishments that strengthened academic achievement, increased participation on Advanced Placement exams, increased composite scores on the SAT and ACT, and increased acceptance rates to competitive colleges and universities. As the leader of one of the largest high schools in Bergen County, Dr. Gorman managed a budget of over $17 million and oversaw large capital projects, including the transformation of the Learning Commons, the renovation of a state-of-the-art fitness center, and the addition of a Makerspace classroom. Dr. Gorman has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the students in all areas that contribute to their educational experience - academics, arts, athletics, and activities - recognizing that an effective learning environment nurtures all students and their unique interests.

Dr. Gorman possesses a doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision, and a Bachelor of Arts in History. Before coming to Ridgewood, Dr. Gorman was principal of Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School. He also held two positions as assistant principal following his years as a high school social studies teacher. Dr. Gorman has shared his expertise on growth learning assessment as a presenter and panelist at the New Jersey School Boards Conference, among many examples where he has addressed critical topics facing school systems. Dr. Gorman also brings a business background, having started his career in marketing.

In a letter to the school community, Mr. Michael W. Lembo, president of the Ridgewood Board of Education, wrote, “Dr. Gorman is both a Ridgewood High School graduate and a long-standing member of the community who understands the value of a Ridgewood education and the strong connections between the district and community. As a parent and educator, Dr. Gorman is truly dedicated to the mission of the district, the goals of the strategic plan, and the lifelong success of every learner.”

The Ridgewood Board of Education conducted a rigorous search process over the past several months, having received applications from a diverse group of talented educators from around the country. The Board approved Dr. Gorman’s appointment effective March 1, 2021, through June 30, 2025. The district anticipates that the high school principal position will be posted by the end of the week, at which time the formal search process will begin.

“As we move forward as a district and look at how we are to accomplish our goals, we must find the balance between honoring the past, celebrating the present, and envisioning the future,” said Dr. Gorman. “While the pandemic has been an unprecedented challenge, it has also provided an opportunity to try innovative ways to educate our students and leapfrog into the future. The months ahead will bring challenges, but I know that by working together, we can and will succeed.”
