Janine Halloran, LMHC, virtually presents "Coping Skills During the Pandemic & Beyond":  Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 7:00 pm 

After more than a  year of living with COVID, this back to school season poses unique challenges for children, teens and families.  Janine Halloran, LMHC, bestselling author and founder of Coping Skills for Kids, will discuss simple and practical tips to ease the transition back to school this fall.  Ms. Halloran will share ideas to help kids manage the expected back to school worries that will happen as we return to full time in-person learning and find out footing in this next phase of living through a pandemic.

Janine Halloran is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who has been working with children, teens, and their families for 20 years.  She has been helping children and teens build their coping skills throughout her career in a variety of settings, including schools, mental health clinics, and in her private practice.  She is the author of several books, including the bestselling Coping Skills for Kids Workbook and the Coping Skills for Teens Workbook.  Her work has been featured in the Boston Globe, CNN, Psych Central, Huffington Post, and The Skimm® Newsletter.

The "Art of Perception®" with Amy E. Herman:  February 7, 2022 at 7:00 pm in the Benjamin Franklin Middle School Auditorium

Ms. Herman uses works of art to sharpen observation, analysis, and communication skills.  By showing people how to look closely at various works of art, she helps them hone their visual intelligence to recognize the most pertinent and useful information, as well as recognize biases that impede decision making. 

This highly participatory seminar, developed in 2000, has been delivered with great success to medical professionals, the NYPD, FBI, Fortune 500 companies, first responders, educators, and more. The program has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The CBS Evening News, and Smithsonian Magazine, among others.

Ms. Herman holds an A.B., a J.D., and an M.A. in art history. Her book, Visual Intelligence: Sharpen Your Perception, Change Your Life, was on the New York Times and Washington Post best sellers' lists. Her second book, Fixed: How to Perfect the Fine Art of Problem-Solving was just released.

Dr. Judith Owens virtually presents "A Perfect Storm:  Sleep in Adolescents":  Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 7:00 pm

Dr. Owens will describe normal sleep development during adolescence, outline the physical and mental health, safety and academic consequences of deficient sleep in teens, and summarize data supporting healthy school start times as a public health intervention.

Judith Owens, MD, MPH is Co-Director of Sleep Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital and a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School.  She has authored over 150 original research and review articles in peer-review journals, chapters and books on pediatric sleep.  Her particular interests are in the neurobehavioral and health consequences of sleep problems in adolescents and the role of school start times, sleep health education and cultural and psychosocial issues impacting sleep.  She was the lead author on the AAP 2014 Policy Statement on healthy school start times and is on the Board of Directors of national non-profit Start School Later.

Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee presents "Cultural Competency":  Monday, May 16, 2022 at 7:00 pm in the George Washington Middle School Auditorium

How is Old School Diversity (something good to do and nice to have) shifting to 21st Century Cultural Competency (something critical in the success of all students in a global world)?  Join classroom teacher and expert diversity trainer, Rosetta Lee, and learn about culture and cultural competency, trends in K-12 schools, colleges, and workplaces.  How is cultural competency a value added model that involves everyone, promotes educational excellence and advances future success?

Since 2004, Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee has been a diversity speaker and trainer on a variety of topics, including cross cultural communication, identity development, implicit and unconscious bias, gender and sexuality diversity, facilitation skills, and bullying in schools.  Ms. Lee has worked with over 300 K-12 schools throughout the country, as well as a number of colleges and universities.  She has served several years on the faculty of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Diversity Leadership Institute, as well as NAIS' diversity think-tank cadre, Call to Action.

Heather Turgeon, MFT and Julie Wright, MFT, virtually present "Healthy Sleep, Healthy Teens":  Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 7:00 pm 

Heather Turgeon, MFT and Julie Wright, MFT are psychotherapists, sleep specialists, and authors of the popular parenting books, The Happy Sleeper, Now Say This, and Generation Sleepless: Why tweens and teens aren't sleeping enough, and how we can help them. Through their online sleep classes and consultations as founders of The Happy Sleeper, Ms. Wright and Ms. Turgeon help families with babies, kids, and teens sleep well. Ms. Turgeon's writing has appeared in The New York Times and The Washington Post. She lives in Los Angeles and has a (well-rested) tween and teen. Ms. Wright is the creator of one of LA’s best known parenting programs, The Wright Mommy and Me. She lives in New York City and has a young adult son.

Ms. Turgeon and Ms. Wright will discuss their new book, Generation Sleepless, exploring the science of teen sleep, along with the ways that families, high schools, sports teams and others can take steps to help teens improve their sleep, health, and wellbeing. Learn how healthy sleep can promote positive mental health, academic performance, and overall wellbeing.
