Testing Recommended for Students/Staff with COVID-19 Symptoms

Symptomatic

Regardless of vaccination or previous infection status, COVID-19 testing is recommended for anyone with symptoms.

Symptomatic individuals should consider getting tested for other respiratory illnesses that could be spread to others, such as flu. 

  1. Can return to school if fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and symptoms are improving.
  2. Contact your school nurse concerning Positive FLU or COVID-19 illness  and leave a detailed message on the absence line.

Ridgewood Public Schools recommends, based on NJDOH and CDC guidelines, that students and staff stay home if testing positive. 


If fever-free for 24 hours or more, the student/ staff member may return to school.


If symptoms persist, guidelines recommend that the individual continue to isolate until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications and symptoms have improved. 
RPS recommends that all COVID-19 positive individuals stay home for days 1-5. Mask wearing is recommended on days 6-10.

RPS recommends that all COVID-19 positive individuals stay home for days 1-5. If symptom free, we recommend masking on days 6-10.

Athletic Participation after COVID-19 Positive 


Written medical clearance is no longer required to return to sports. However, it is recommended that athletes see a licensed provider after a COVID illness to ensure medical clearance.  



Students with a temperature equal to or greater than 100.4, vomiting, or diarrhea should stay home according to standard school policy. Students with a fever need to stay home for 24 hours after the last temperature of 100.4 or above, without fever-reducing medications. 

Common symptoms of COVID include (1) one of the following symptoms: new cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or new disorder of smell or taste; or (2) two of the following symptoms: fever (Temperature equal to or greater than 100.4 F), chills, shivers, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, congestion or runny nose. If your student has the above symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider.
